No matter whether or not you are a foreign sightseer or a backpacker from another Chinese city, there are many transport means you can choose from to facilitate your Expo 2010 trip, and to appreciate the charm of China and Shanghai. Water, land and air transport offer you more than one way to realize your dream of a long journey.

Shanghai currently has two major airports—Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport - which have already been largely expanded to accommodate the demands of the Expo. Hongqiao International Airport will present two terminals and two runways with an annual throughput of 30 million passangers. Pudong International Airport will present two terminals and three runways with an annual throughput of 60 million passengers.

Now, it has become one of the most attractive ways to travel. The new terminal of Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, known as “A Drop” on the bank of the Huangpu River, now begins its trial operation. The North Bund Cruise Terminal, the first one to meet international standards in China, is also complete and in operation. The landscaped water front with a length of 850 meters allows three large-scale luxurious cruises to dock at the same time. It is estimated that more than 1 million visitors will be carried by cruises to Shanghai next year.
Prefer to travel by train? It’s the best choice if think economically. Before the opening of the Expo, Hongqiao Station, Shanghai South Station, and Shanghai Station, the three major traffic hubs of Shanghai, will form a circular railway network.
NOTE: Bullet trains and high speed rails are connecting Xiamen to Shanghai. Enquiry can be made at Apple Travel.
If you are a fan of driving yourself on tour, the experience of operating a private car and enjoying the passing views and fresh breeze will be unforgettable. It is well-known that Shanghai is now promoting the integration of the motorway network of the Yangtze River delta. This region’s expressway intercommunication management information system has also been established. In 2010, there will be 10 expressways in the Yangtze River delta, connecting Shanghai with other cities, with 60 lanes.
Getting around Expo Site in Shanghai
Metro transportation will carry about 50% of all visitors. Among Shanghai’s 11 metro lines in 2010, line 4, 6, 7, and 8 will serve the Expo directly, and plus the Expo line (line 13), it will be like “six dragons crossing the river and meeting at the Expo” (line 4 is a loop line, so it will cross the river twice).
Ground transportation will carry 35% to 40% of all visitors. As early as in 2005, Shanghai began building the bus-only lane, and it has been expanding at a rate of around 30 kilometers annually. This figure will reach 300 kilometers in 2010, and there will be several Expo bus-only lanes linking suburbia and Expo site.
Shanghai is to open 42 special bus routes during the upcoming 2010 World Expo to help get visitors to the Expo sites. The newly-opened routes will connect with bus hubs and subway stations, as well as entrances and exits to the Expo site.
Buses and subways around the Expo site will also extend operating hours. Fifty-thousand cabs will also help to meet the transport demand during the Expo.
Moreover, a kind of water transportation will carry about 5% of visitors. After a security check at the water gate, visitors can enter Expo site by waterbus directly.
Getting to Any Spot in Expo Site
Expo site covers a large area. Some pavilions are located in a centralized area, while others are quite far from each other. Bus lines inside the site will be quite helpful. The planning of bus stations has taken into consideration of pavilion distribution and site scales. Environment-friendly shuttles are another choice to take you from pavilion to pavilion.
If you did not choose to enter the site by water, you can do it when you want to visit the Urban Best Practices Area or corporate pavilions in Puxi. As water channels inside the site, ferry and waterbus can transport 20,000 person/times per hour.
In fact, the most common transportation is by foot in the site. Pavilions are fantastic and performances are exciting, you can take your time and enjoy every wonderful moment.
About 70 millions tourists from home and abroad are expected to visit the 2010 Shanghai World Expo from May 1 to October 31. Shanghai is ready, Are you?
