A partial lunar eclipse to be seen in Xiamen

A partial lunar eclipse can be observed in Xiamen on Jan. 2, 2010, according to the Fujian Provincial Astronomical Observatory.

The partial eclipse will begin at 3:00am on the 2nd Jan, reach the maximum eclipse at 3: 23am and end at 3:56am. The whole process will last about one hour.

It will be the first time that a partial lunar eclipse occurs on the second day of the New Year in nearly 1,000 years, according to Mr. Chen Donghua, director of the Fujian Provincial Astronomical Society.

Lunar eclipses can be viewed with the naked eye if the weather is fine. However, as the entire moon will cross the penumbra partial shadow of the earth, it will appear significantly dimmer around the time of the partial eclipse, said Mr. Chen.

In addition, an annular eclipse will occur on the evening of Jan. 15, 2010, which will be the first annular eclipse that can be observed in China since 1987. However, people in Xiamen will only be able to witness a partial eclipse due to the geographical location.
